Official Contest Rules

Calling all fashion design creatives – we need YOU! Belk’s premier private label brand, Crown & Ivy™, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. To commemorate this crown worthy occasion, we’re providing college students the opportunity to bring their personal inspiration to life for our Spring 2024 Crown & Ivy™ 10 Year Anniversary collection (“Collection”).

Crown & Ivy™ is a staple in the Belk customer’s closet. The brand’s aesthetic is crisp, vibrant, and attention to detail key to each garment’s design. From ruffles, plaids, prints, and polka dots, these clothes bring joy and happiness to our customer’s wardrobe. To celebrate 10 years of this brand’s continued success, we invite you to the party to show us your design talents!

Eligibility:

  • The Belk, Inc. (“Belk”) Crown Worthy Celebration College Design Contest (“Contest”) is open to freshman to junior college students (“Students”) actively enrolled in a full-time class schedule at: North Carolina State University, The University of Alabama, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, Clark Atlanta University, Fashion Institute of Technology, Indiana University, Mississippi State University, University of South Carolina, Kent State University, The Savannah College of Art and Design, Meredith College, University of Cincinnati, Birmingham City University, Drexel University, Columbia College, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Otis College of Art and Design, Parsons School of Design – The New School, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, and Oregon State University.
  • Students must be at least eighteen (18) years old, a legal resident of the United States, and have declared a Fashion Design or Merchandising major.
  • Employees of Belk or its affiliates/subsidiaries and the immediate family of Belk employees and household members of any Belk employees are not eligible to participate in this Contest.

Contest Period: The Contest starts at 8:00 a.m. ET on October 11, 2022 and ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on January 31, 2023. Submissions received before or after the Contest Period will not be eligible.

How to Enter: There are three (3) possible methods of entry into this Contest. There is a limit of one (1) design submission per person to this Contest. Any attempt to obtain more than one (1) submission by using multiple/different identities, registrations, or any other methods will void that Student’s submission and will result in disqualification from the Contest.

  1. Via QR Code: Scan the QR code provided and complete the required information to upload your design submission to the Yello platform, including your first and last name, major, e-mail address, phone number, graduation month and year, university, work authorization, and designs (“Required Information”). Please note that you must agree to comply with the Yello Privacy Policy.
  2. Via Handshake or Simplicity: A Handshake or Simplicity account is required for this method of entry and can be opened for free through your school. Please note that you must agree to comply with the Handshake Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and the Simplicity Terms of Use and Privacy Policy in order to create your account. To enter during the Contest Period, via a Handshake or Simplicity account: (a) visit the Handshake or Simplicity platform through your school, (b) internet access is required for entry, and (c) complete the Required Information to upload your design submission to your school’s designated platform.
  3. Via URL Link: Follow the URL link provided, https://tinyurl.com/2fkalpb8, and complete the Required Information to upload your design to the Yello platform. Please note that you must agree to comply with the Yello Privacy Policy.

Prize: Belk will select one (1) potential winner of the Contest who will receive:

  • One (1) Five Thousand Dollar and No Cents ($5,000.00) grant toward school tuition or school expenses. The potential winner is responsible for all applicable taxes and costs, expenses, or fees associated with prize receipt and/or use.
  • The winning designs will be produced, featured, and available in the Collection in all of Belk’s sales channels (i.e. stores, website, and app).
  • Designation as an emerging young designer in Belk marketing materials associated with the Collection.
  • The approximate retail value of the prize is $5,000.00.
  • Belk is not responsible or liable in any manner if the potential winner or the prize is unable to accept or use all or any portion of the prize due to failure to qualify or comply with these Rules or any law, regulation or other rules that apply to acceptance, receipt or use of the prize.
  • The prize cannot be transferred or substituted, except in Belk’s sole discretion. Belk reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value should the featured prize, or any elements thereof, become unavailable.

Winner Selection Process:

a. Judging: After the Contest Period, Belk will evaluate all submissions and select one (1) potential winner based on the following criteria: (i) fit with the Crown & Ivy™ brand aesthetic, and (ii) and meet with all submission requirements set forth below. Any submission that, in Belk’s judgment, violates the following criteria will be disqualified. Each design submission must:

  • Contain designs for six (6) outfit designs or twelve (12) individual design pieces.
  • Be for the Crown & Ivy™ categories of Women's, Men's, or Kids Apparel, Soft Home, or Décor. Students may submit all designs for one category or may work across categories.
  • Have brand synergy, marketability, and be innovate.
  • Not have been previously used or published by any third parties in print, digital, or any other format.
  • Not include any material that may infringe on any third parties’ intellectual property rights.
  • Not have been previously entered into another contest..

b. Background Check: Belk will conduct a background check on the potential winner. By submitting Student’s designs, Student agrees to (a) submit to a background check, in accordance with applicable laws, and execute all documents required by Belk in connection with such background check; (b) authorize Belk to secure information about Student from any current or former employers, associates, family members, educational institutions, government agencies, credit reporting agencies, and any references Student provides or that are developed in the course of such investigation; (d) irrevocably authorize such parties to provide information concerning to Belk; and (e) authorize Belk to investigate and obtain copies of Student’s employment records (if applicable) and governmental records, including but not limited to, any motor vehicle records, criminal records, and credit and/or consumer report(s). If a potential winner does not, in Belk’s sole discretion, pass the background check(s), Belk will select an alternate potential winner in Student’s place according to the judging criteria.

Notification and Requirements of Potential Winner: Belk will attempt to notify the potential winner on or around February 28, 2023. Except where prohibited, a potential winner shall be required to complete and return an affidavit of eligibility, a liability/publicity release, an agreement transferring all intellectual property rights, including ownership rights, in Student’s designs to Belk, as well as provide proof of Student’s eligibility to work in the United States (acceptable forms of proof include a valid U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, and valid green card or visa). If a potential winner fails to sign and return these documents within five (5) business days, Belk may select an alternate potential winner in Student’s place according to the judging criteria.

Privacy; Publicity: By submitting an entry, Student consents to the collection, use, and disclosure by Belk of the information contained therein in accordance with Sponsor’s Privacy Policy (https://www.belk.com/customer-service/policies-guidelines/privacy-policy/). By entering the Contest and/or accepting a prize, Student grants Belk and Belk’s designee the perpetual right to use Student’s name, voice, image, biographical information, photos and/or likeness, designs, statements, and submission for Contest, trade, commercial, advertising, and publicity purposes, at any time or times, in all media now known or hereafter discovered, worldwide, without notice, review, or approval, and without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law.

Release; Limitation of Liability: To the fullest extent permitted by law, by participating in this Contest, Students release and agree to hold harmless Belk, its parent and their respective affiliates and subsidiaries, as well as the directors, officers, agents, shareholders, representatives, employees, successors and assigns of any of the above organizations (“Released Parties”), from any and all liability for any claims, causes of action, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind caused by their participation, including, without limitation, loss of property, intellectual property infringement, the unauthorized access to personally identifiable or sensitive information or the acceptance, or possession, use, or misuse of the prize. The Released Parties are not responsible for: (1) any illegible or incomplete submissions, or incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Students, printing errors or by any other cause; (2) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the submission process or this Contest; (3) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of this Contest or the processing of submissions; (4) late, lost, undeliverable, damaged, or stolen e-mail or communications in this Contest; or (5) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from Student’s participation in this Contest or receipt or use or misuse of any prize.

Disputes: Except where prohibited, each Student agrees that: (1) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina or the appropriate North Carolina State Court located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; (2) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this giveaway, but in no event attorneys’ fees; and (3) under no circumstances will Student be permitted to obtain awards for, and Student hereby waives all rights to claim, indirect, punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the Student and Belk in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of North Carolina.
